Hubert Ernest Gerken, age 84 of York, NE, died Saturday, July 1, 2017 at Lincoln, NE. He was born March 4, 1933 in York to Ernest and Elizabeth (Koester) Gerken. Hubert was baptized in 1933, and later confirmed at Emmanuel Lutheran Church on May 22, 1947 and graduated from York High School in 1952. After completing his education he was married to Connie Lea Charlton on October 12, 1952 at Peace Lutheran Church, Waco. To this union five sons were born: Michael, Stanley, Brian, Keith, and Richard.
Hubert was a longtime member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of York, member of the York Cattleman’s Association, York Sports Coach, and the York Trail Riders. Hubert was a longtime York County farmer, along with working at Champion Home Builders, and Pflug Grain Company. Hubert served his country for 6 years in the Army National Guard. He especially loved his family, and was very proud of all of them.
He is survived by his wife Anna Marie of York; sons, Michael (Kelly) Gerken, of York, Stanley (Ronda) Gerken, of York, Brian (Tammi) Gerken, of Taylor, NE, Keith (Sherry) Gerken, of York, and Richard (Brenda) Gerken of York. He is also survived by grandchildren, Heather (Justin) Schoenholz, of Imperial, NE, Amber (Adam) Rediger, of Benedict, NE, Noelle (Sean) Mandeville, of Benedict, NE, Nicole (Brian) Nielsen, Jennifer (Adam) Scharp, Ashton Gerken, Abbie Gerken, all of Lincoln, NE, Holly Gerken (fiancé Chuck Brooks) of Brainard, NE, Beau (Cassandra) Gerken, of Wheatland, WY, Tiffany (fiancé Dan Doremus) Gerken, of York, David (Meghan) Gerken, of York, Cody Gerken, significant other Mindy Streeter, of Henderson, NE, Steven (Susan) Gerken, of McCool Jct., NE, Carrie (Bradley) Epp, of Henderson, NE, and Amanda (Lance) Ring, of York. Hubert is survived by 26 great-grandchildren, along with 1 great-great grandchild on the way. He is also survived by his sister, Marilyn Stephen, of Junction City, KS, brothers-in-law, Ken (Peg) Rystrom, of Hastings, Bob (Cheryl) Rystrom, Rex (Florence) Charlton, of York, of Lincoln, sister-in-law Ann Charlton, of York. He is survived by Anna Marie’s children Kristi Maneely and Lisa (John) Harrison, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents, first wife Connie and his infant brother Leland, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law, Donna Charlton Westwood, brothers-in-law, Alan Stephen, Don Westwood, and Gary Charlton, and two nephews.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, July 6, 2017 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York with the Reverends Mike Neidow and Ben Kaiser officiating. Burial with full military honors followed at the Greenwood Cemetery in York. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
