Ray Svehla

Long- time York, Nebraska Attorney, Ray Svehla, age 86, of York, Nebraska passed away peacefully on Friday, November 3, 2017 at York.

Born on August 7, 1931 to John B. and Frances (Prokop) Svehla and raised in Friend, Nebraska, where he graduated from high school. Ray Svehla went on to graduate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Law in 1954. Ray and his family moved to York in 1956 upon serving in the Army. He practiced law in York for over 40 years. Ray married the love of his life, Anabel "Ann" Svehla on December 25, 1951. Together they were blessed with four children, Cheryl Seib, John Svehla, Jean MacDonald and Karen Olin.

Ray is a former York County Attorney. He served as President of the York School Board, President of the York Jaycees, and President of the York Library Board. He served for over 25 years on the York General Hospital Board, the York General Hearthstone Board, and the First National Bank of York Board. Ray was a Trustee of the University of Nebraska Foundation and a member of the Kilgore Memorial Library Foundation. He served as an elected delegate to the Nebraska State Bar Association and was elected as a Fellow to the Nebraska State Bar Foundation.

Ray Svehla enjoyed sports of all kinds, especially baseball. Ray and his wife loved to travel. Together they made over 50 trips outside of the continental United States.

His greatest joys in life were his wife of 65 years, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ray is preceded in death by his parents, John and Frances Svehla; wife of 65 years Anabel "Ann" Svehla; two brothers, Bern Svehla and Don Svehla. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law Robert (Fern) Svehla and by his four children Cheryl (Tom) Seib of Lincoln, John (Karen) Svehla of Lincoln, Jean (Stuart) MacDonald of Melbourne, FL, and Karen (Terry) Olin of Omaha; nine grandchildren, Sarah (Dan) Beaudoin of Minot, ND, Greg Seib of Lincoln, Ryan Seib of Lincoln, Justin Svehla of Wichita, KS, Trent Svehla of Omaha, and Jessica (Brett) Nelson of Orlando, FL, Cole Heckman of Denver, CO, Jack Cenovic of Omaha, and Claire Cenovic of Omaha; and three great-grandchildren, Peter, Paul and Claire Beaudoin.

MEMORIAL SERVICES: Thursday, November 9, 2017, 2:30 pm at First United Methodist Church in York. Private family in Greenwood Cemetery, York.
