Art lived in Meeker, OK, Jet, OK Ogallala, NE, and North Platte NE before moving to York in 1946. He attended West Ward Elementary School, graduated from York High School and graduated from Hastings College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1959. Art served in the Air National Guard, 155th Combat Support Squadron for 6 years, from March 1959 to March 1965.
Art worked at Toms Produce, was a partner in Toms Sporting Goods, owned and operated, with his wife, Toms Dairy Treats, where he is especially remembered for his BBQ sandwiches. He also worked the Sunday Buffet at the Chances R restaurant and was the Chief Correction Officer with the York County Sherriff’s Department. After retirement, Art went to work for Wal-Mart. Art belonged to the First Presbyterian Church of York and was a past deacon of the church.
On June 30, 1968 he married Linda Petersen at the First Presbyterian Church of Fullerton. Art and Linda have 2 sons, Matthew of McCool Junction and Jeffrey of Windsor, CO.
Survivors include his wife, of 45 years, Linda of York; sons Matthew and wife Stacy of McCool Junction, NE and Jeffery and wife Amanda of Windsor, CO; grandchildren: Aurora Toms of McCool Junction, Sutton Toms of Windsor, Harper Toms of McCool Junction, Peter Toms, Pearson Toms, Cyrus Toms, Hadley Toms and Sophia Toms of Windsor; and special dog Abby who was his constant companion.
Art is also survived by brothers, Charles “Tommy” H. Toms and wife Adaire and Dr. Paul Toms and wife Carol all of York; sister, Jane Toms Bovey and husband William “Bill” Bovey of Kearney, NE; nephews, Charles (Tommy) H. Toms III of Hastings, NE and Sean Bovey of Holdrege, NE; nieces: Vicki (Toms) Northrop of Hastings, Kristi (Toms) Felix of Lincoln, NE, Cindi (Toms) Nickel of York, Cathy (Toms) Davis of Hastings, and Susan Toms) Heinz of Weeping Water, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be held At 10:00 am, Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church, fourth and Delaware Avenue, York, NE with Pastor Michael Eickhoff officiating. Casual dress. Nursery will be provided. Graveside services will be held at a later date. Visitation will be 1-9 pm Tuesday at the mortuary with the family greeting friends from 6–8:30 pm. Memorials may be directed to the church or Adopt-A-Pet.
