    Carol “Gene” “Red” McGregor, age 83, of York, NE died Thursday, January 21, 2021 in York. He was born November 22, 1937 in Marion, Iowa to Frank L. and Lois C. (Dolly) McGregor. Gene served his country in the Army National Guard. On July 14, 1963 he was united in marriage to Roberta Smith in York.

    ​Gene worked for 21 years at York Cold Storage, and was a long time York Volunteer Fire Fighter. He enjoyed woodworking and playing computer games. His family remembers him as a hard-working family man.

    He is survived by his wife Roberta of York, son Jeff (Monica) McGregor of York, and daughter Gena McGregor of Portland, Oregon. His grandchildren include: Chad (Marilou) McGregor, Monique McGregor, Cole McGregor and Libbye McGregor, all of Bremerton, WA, Tolen McGregor of California, and Solie Bates of Poulsbo, WA. He is also survived by his sister-in-law LeeAnn McGregor of York, and his cousin Keith (Elaine) Blair of Ollie, IA, along with several nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Homer, 2 infant sisters, and his half-sister, Helen.

    Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 29, 2021 at the Metz Chapel in York. Interment with Military and Fire Fighter Honors will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in York. Visitation will be held 1:00 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday at the mortuary in York. Gene’s funeral service will be webcast live on  Metz Mortuary’s Facebook Page. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.

    COVID 19 Funeral Guidelines will be implemented with limited spaced seating (75% occupancy), 6 feet of separation between household units, and masks required.
