Duane Green – Metz Mortuary

    Duane Evan Green, age 90 of McCool Junction, NE died on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 at Fairmont, NE. Duane was born January 3, 1931 to Ernest and Janice (Evans) Green Jr. at rural McCool Junction. Duane graduated from McCool Junction High School and then served his country as a member of the United States Navy. Duane was united in marriage to Pearl Christine Larson on December 30, 1953 in York.

    ​Duane was a long-time farmer and carpenter. He had also worked at York Packing Plant and delivered newspapers for York News-Times. Duane loved the McCool community and was active with the McCool Fire Department, McCool village board, and McCool Community Club.  He was also a member of the Ronald Porter Post 341 American Legion, Woodmen of America, and had been a leader for Boy Scouts and 4-H. Duane was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in McCool, where he had served on the church council and was a youth group leader.

    You would often see Duane driving around town on his golf cart and making sure to stop and visit with whomever he could. When sitting in his chair on the front lawn you could always count on a friendly wave and smile as you passed by.  Duane enjoyed gardening and was constantly seen in his flower gardens. Bird watching was also a favorite as well.  During the Christmas holiday, he put together an amazing display of 15,000 lights and decorations that people from miles around would come to see.  Most of all, Duane loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

    He is survived by his children: Jim (Carol) Green of McCool Junction, Kathy (Virgil) Heine of York, Gene (Kris) Green of York, Julie (Mike) Rea of McCool Junction and Steve (Richard Carpenter) Green of McCool Junction.
    Grandchildren include: Deanna (CJ) Zmarzlinski of New Orleans, Christopher (Nadine) Green of Virginia Beach, Virginia., Shelli (Dusty) Ihde of Omaha, Christina (Justin) Dose of Hampton, Melissa (Lucas) Stewart of Long Pine, Tiffany (Brandon) Suhr of McCool Junction, Andrew Heine of Fremont, Ryan Will of York and Derek Rea of McCool Junction. 

    Great-grandchildren include:  Christopher Shottenkirk of York, Zandria Unruh of Manhattan, Kansas, Douglas Shottenkirk of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Gillian Daniel of Wayne, Riley and Lexi Daniel of Seward, Wanita Pearl and Daisy-Anne Green of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Paige Green, Hank and Samantha Ihde of Omaha, Deven, Eric and baby Dose of Hampton, Alaina, Archer, Rhen Stewart of Long Pine, Kaylinn Jo, Jordinn Suhr of McCool Junction.

    Great-Great Grandchildren include: Kolton Yaw of Manhattan, Kansas, Baby Shottenkirk of York.

    He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, great grandson Cooper, and three sisters.

    Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 pm, Monday, August 23, 2021 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, McCool Junction. Burial with military honors will follow at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, east of McCool. Visitation will be held from 1-8 pm on Sunday, with family greeting friends from 5-7pm that evening, all at Metz mortuary. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
