Gary was a member of the Farmer’s Co-Op Board. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church where he served as an elder. He also sold Garst seed com and served on the York Public School Board for many years. He enjoyed being with family, fishing, and coffee with his many friends. Gary liked to sing in the church choir, and was known as Gary Garst and for imparting “Nickel Knowledge” to his family and friends.
Gary is survived by his wife of 56 years Mary Jane of York, son Tim (Jill) Meradith of North Platte, and daughter MinDee (Jeff) Richey of Papillion. He is also survived by his grandsons Daniel Meradith of Rock Springs, WY, and Brandon Meradith of Richmond, TX, brother Bob and Sara Meradith of Omaha, sister Jody and Dave Johnston of North Platte, brother-in-law Merle and Geraldine Naber of York, sisters-in-law Pat Naber of York and Jeanette and Roger Jensen of Grand Island. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Heidi Meradith, brother Richard Meradith, his parents-in-law Alvin and Augusta Naber, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ronnie and Charlotte Naber.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York with the Reverends Mike Neidow and Ben Kaiser officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in York. Visitation is scheduled from 1 :00 – 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 20, 2021 with the family greeting friends between 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., at the mortuary in York. Memorials may be directed to Emmanuel Lutheran Church or Emmanuel-Faith Lutheran School.
