Gilbert Naber – Metz Mortuary

    Gilbert Naber, age 90 of Waco, NE, died Monday, February 7, 2022 in Lincoln, NE.  He was born on December 20, 1931 to Frederick Oscar and Maria Hulda Bertha (Schlueter) Naber in York, NE.  He attended St. John’s elementary school, two years at Concordia High School in Seward, NE, then graduated from Waco High School in 1949. On November 16, 1958, he was united in marriage to Shirley Mae Hirschfeld in the First United Methodist Church in York, NE. 

    Gilbert was a lifelong member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church, and a long-time member of Lutheran Layman’s League and Gideons International.  He sang in the church choir, taught Sunday school, and served in various church offices. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army and was a 31 year member of the Utica American Legion Post # 49.

    He was a lifelong farmer, a German Farmers Mutual agent, and served on the Waco Rural Fire Board.

    Gilbert is survived by his wife Shirley of Waco, his daughter Sonya (Mark) Dannehl of Bertrand, NE, and his son Dwight (Kimberly) Naber of Osborne, KS, his grandchildren Craig Dannehl of Boston, MA, Adam Dannehl of Lexington, NE, Ethan Dannehl of Bertrand, NE, Emma Dannehl of Racine, WI, Kylie Reiss (Garrett) of St. George, KS, and his great-grandchildren Sawyer Dannehl and Kallie Reiss.  He is also survived by his sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Charlotte Luethje of Roca, NE, H.P. (Coleen) Hirschfeld of Waco, NE, Linda Hirschfeld of Lincoln, NE, and his nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister, and his brothers Ervin, Ralph, Virgil, and Wilbur.

    Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 12, 2022 at St. John’s Lutheran Church south of Waco, NE with the Reverend Matthew Mau officiating.  Burial will follow at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 1-8 p.m. on Friday, February 11, 2022, with the family greeting friends from 6-7:30 p.m., all at Metz Mortuary in York.  Memorials may be directed to Lutheran Church Missions Central at 40718 Hwy E16, Mapleton, IA 51034, Gideons International at P.O.
