H. Bernadine Smith

Helen Bernadine (Lorenzen) Smith of York, NE, passed from this world into the arms of the Father on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at the age of 104, while in residence at Legacy Square in Henderson. She was born May 25, 1920 to Carsten and Ethel Bickford Lorenzen on a farm near Neligh, Antelope County, Nebraska, as the third of four girls.

She was her father’s “right hand girl” and rode many miles on her beloved King, herding cattle and checking fences. She was an avid reader, often taking a book along on horseback. After high school she moved to Omaha where she met Marshall Francis Smith of Hutchinson, KS. They were married August 18, 1941 and moved to Moline, Illinois where Marshall worked as a machinist at the bomber factory, later returning to Omaha where he worked for Union Pacific. To this union were born two daughters and two sons. In 1964 they moved to Seward, Nebraska, where Marshall worked for Hughes Brothers and Bernadine was employed at Protective Fire and Casualty. They lived briefly in Lincoln after retiring and then moved to Prescott Valley, Arizona in 1978.

Bernadine was a lifelong follower of Jesus and taught Bible classes for children and women for many years. She was an ‘Avon’ lady while raising her family in Omaha and became a computer lady while she worked for the insurance company in Seward. After settling their mobile home in Arizona, she became active with the community lending library. After it became a certified library, she served as president of the library board. She took classes in local history and was knowledgeable in local flora and fauna. She was an excellent tour guide when the children and grandchildren visited. At the age of 60, Bernadine took the first of four hiking trips down and up the Grand Canyon. In 1981, Marshall dropped her off at the South Rim, and then drove around to their reserved cabin on the North Rim. She hiked down, spent the night, hiked up to the North Rim where they celebrated their 40th anniversary. She also rafted the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon with John Clayton’s group. After Marshall died in 1989, she continued to welcome the children, grandchildren and other visitors. In 2007, she moved to live with her older daughter, Diane, in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. She moved back to Nebraska in 2010 and kept her own apartment at the York Leisure Home until 2016 when she moved into assisted living at Mahoney House.  She lived with her younger daughter Deena from 2020 until September 2023 when she moved to Legacy Square care home in Henderson.

She is survived by her daughter, Diane (Richard) Hudson of Beatrice; son, Dennis (Clara) Smith of Seward; daughter, Deena (Harold) Tandy of York and son Marshall (Connie) Smith Jr of Lacey, Washington; fourteen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren, one great-great-grand child, one niece and a number of great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters-Wanda of Neligh, Lois Donner of Elgin and Norma Walther of Arvada, CO, her husband of 48 years-Marshall and 3 grandchildren.
