    Harold William Alms, 86, died Sunday, April 27, 2014 at Grand Island. He was born March 13, 1928 in York County to Paul and Anna (Richert) Alms. He was a graduate of Benedict High School.

    Harold was a Korean War Veteran and served his country from 1951-1953 in the Army with the 407 Engineer Combat Battalion – Company A. He served nearly 11 months in Korea near the 38th degree parallel. He received the Korean Service Medal with two bronze stars. He was a member of the York American Legion.

    Harold was united in marriage to Marie Regier on Sept. 26, 1954 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Hampton. He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York where he served as Elder and various other offices and sang in the choir. He was a former member and Treasurer of the Benedict School Board. Harold lived and farmed in the Benedict/York area all his life and was a former leader with the Lively Livestock 4-H Club. He raised Hereford cattle and was a member of the Nebraska Hereford Association.

    Harold is survived by his wife, Marie of York; sons, Gerald (Jerry) and wife Cheryl Alms of Eden Prairie, Minn. and John and wife Shawna Alms of York; daughter, Linda Schmidt of Columbus; seven grandchildren, Scott (Jillian) Schmidt of Columbus, Lindsay (Talon) Darling of Denver, Colo., Capt. William (Lindsey) Alms of Bloomington, Minn., Kathryn Alms of Sidney, Kelsey Schmidt of Columbus, Joslynne Alms of Lincoln and Tyler Alms of York; four great-grandchildren, Ty Schmidt, Carter Schmidt, Gwenyth Darling and Brooklynn Alms.

    Harold is also survived by his sister, Marian Gruber of Lincoln; four brothers, Kenneth (MaryLou) Alms of Sarasota, Fla., Alvin (Jacque) Alms of Grand Island, Arthur Alms of Lincoln and Robert (Connie) Alms of Norwalk, Ohio; sister-in-law, Elnora Alms of York; brother-in-law, Melvin Gottula of Adams; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Edgar, Martin and LaVerne; sister, Hilda Gottula; son-in-law, Roger Schmidt; brothers-in-law, Paul Gruber and Raymond Regier; and sisters-in-law, Marilyn Alms, Paula Alms and Ruth Alms.

    Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in York with Pastors Mike Neidow and Ben Kaiser officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at York’s Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary with the family greeting friends that evening from 6-8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
