Harry Ellsworth Heath, Jr.

    Harry Ellsworth Heath, Jr., age 85 of Lincoln, Nebraska passed away in Lincoln on Friday, May 10, 2024.

    Harry was born August 30, 1938, in Broadwater, Nebraska to Harry Ellsworth Heath, Sr. and Ila Darlene (Bennett) Heath and grew up in the Nebraska panhandle graduating from Broadwater Public Schools in 1956.  He immediately enlisted and served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Iowa, which took him on many adventures throughout the world.  Upon completing his active enlistment in 1959, Harry returned to Nebraska to start a family and worked various jobs including being a ranch hand, setting power poles for an REA and a lineman, while still serving in the Navy Reserve until 1962.

    While vacationing in Florida in 1965, Harry had a notion to apply for a job with the Florida Power Corporation in St. Petersburg, FL and was hired on the spot during his interview.  The family moved to Florida where he was employed through 1976 and earned his associate degree in electrical engineering through the International Correspondence School (ICS) in 1975.  Harry returned to his home state in 1976 and began working for the Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD), starting in Columbus, then Ogallala and finally York, until his official retirement in September 2007, although he continued to work part time for them until 2009.  Harry also trained and worked briefly for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)/Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) assisting with recovery of the Iowa floods in 2008.

    Harry lived his 85 years with a devotion to his profession, kindness for his family and keeping the essence of his spirited cowboy soul vibrant.  Harry was involved in numerous civic associations throughout his life including Jaycees, Ogallala Drovers (recipient of the Golden Spur in 1982), DAV Commanders Club, Master Mason, Ogallala Lodge No. 159, Optimist Club, Sertoma International, VFW, Lions Club and the Elks Club in York.

    Survivors include his spouse, Anne (Lux) Heath of Lincoln; sister, Patsy Sherfey, of Alliance; daughters Brenda (Mark) Wid of Lincoln; Janice Heath of Wyoming; Angie (Chris) Tietmeyer of York and son, Chad Vrbka of Omaha. Grandchildren: Michael (Whitney) Nolan of St. Louis; Eric Nolan of Florida; Travis (Melissa) Nolan of Grand Island; Cory Arent of Colorado; William (Carly) Tietmeyer of Wayne, and Dawson (Hailey) Tietmeyer of York.  Great grandchildren:  Madelyn Nolan, Katelyn Nolan, Grant Nolan, Elijah Nolan, Dakota Nolan, Richie Nolan, Wesley Nolan, Genevieve Nolan and Blakely Tietmeyer; sister-in-law Karen Svehla (special friend, Don Antholz) of Lincoln and brother-in-law Charles (Lori) Lux of York, and a host of other relatives and friends.

    Harry was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Valerie (Heath) Arent; brothers Gene and Kenneth Heath; mother and father-in-law David and Ramona Lux, and brother-in-law, John Svehla.

    A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, May 17, 2024, at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in York, NE, with Pastor John Nellesen officiating.  A private family inurnment will be held.

    Visitation will be held Thursday, May 16, 2024, at Metz Mortuary in York from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Cremation has taken place and there will be no viewing. Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated later in lieu of flowers.
