She resided on the farm near Burchard, NE until the age of 6. At that time, she moved to Wichita, KS with her parents. From there they moved to Plattsmouth, NE, living there until World War II was over. In 1945 she returned to Burchard and graduated from Burchard High School in 1951. She was Valedictorian of her class, and also received a 4-year Regents Scholarship to the University of Nebraska. After graduation her family again moved to Wichita, KS and she graduated from Wichita Business College. She worked for an oil well supply company, first as Secretary to the Purchasing Agent, then as head billing clerk in the billing department.
In 1952 she married Otis Gartner, and continued to live in Wichita until he came back from the Korean Conflict. Their family consisted of Fred, Shirley, and David. They lived in Beatrice, NE where she worked in the Gage County Clerk’s office. In 1966 they purchased the Cedar Motel in Randolph, NE. They moved there and operated it until they sold it in 1971. Before she left Randolph, she also worked in the office of the School Superintendent. At that time, they purchased the Staehr Motel in York, NE and operated it until 1987. Otis passed away in 1991, and in 1992 Janet purchased a mobile home in a mobile home park in Apache Junction, AZ, and became what is known as a “snowbird”, dividing her time equally between Arizona and Nebraska. Through the years in Apache Junction she participated in golf, line dancing, hiking in the Superstition Mountains, singing in a barbershop style singing group and for many years was the Raindance Park Association Secretary, and the Raindance Park Worship Committee Secretary, helping plan the services and making the weekly bulletins.
She is survived by her children Fred (Sheryl) Gartner of Lincoln, NE, Shirley (Steve) Lindquist of Stromsburg, NE, and Dave (Pat) Gartner of York, NE; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, and cousins Carol and Bob Barcomb of Belton, MO, and longtime best friend Donna Dike of Colorado Springs, CO.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 AM, Friday, November 1, 2019 at the Metz Chapel, York. Private family interment. Visitation will be held from 1:00 – 8:00 PM, Thursday, October 31 at the mortuary in York. The family will greet friends one hour prior to services on Friday. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
