    Janice W. (Wimberley) Harris, age 95, of York, NE, passed away Thursday, August 7, 2014 in York.  She
    was born on August 14, 1918, along with her twin brother Jerome W., to Wilson W. and Iva B. (Stafford) Wimberley in Riverdale, NE.  The family moved to Kearney, NE, when the twins were two years old.
     
    In 1936, Janice graduated from Kearney High School and attended Kearney State College for one year.  She then went to St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Denver, CO.  After graduating in 1941, she worked for the Nebraska State Health Department and later served as school nurse for Shelton Public Schools.
     
    On July 27, 1946, she married Norman E. Harris at her brother’s house in Minden, NE.   They had two children, Kristi and J. Scott, and made their home and farmed in the Shelton area until 2000 when they moved to York, NE.  Janice and Norm were very active in the Shelton community, giving countless hours to such organizations as the Shelton United Methodist Church and Shelton Public Schools.  In 1996, the Nebraska Chapter of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials awarded Janice the Outstanding Commissioner Award for her work with the Shelton Housing Authority.  Janice was also a 67 year member and past president of Chapter BI, P.E.O.
     
    Janice and Norm had a sense of adventure and curiosity about the world that led them to travel extensively, touring all fifty states, all Canadian provinces, and as far away as Australia.  They were also well known for their bountiful garden, which would provide Janice with the ingredients for meals she so enjoyed preparing for family and friends. 
     
    Janice is survived by her daughter Kristi (Fred) Scheele of Waco, NE, and her son J. Scott (Jolyn) Harris of Kearney, MO; five grandchildren: Karla Scheele of Elkhorn, NE, Kevin (Katie) Scheele of Lincoln, NE, Kyle Scheele of Austin, TX, Jennifer Turpin of Fort Mill, SC, and Wendy (Jeff) Jackson of Clover, SC; three great-grandchildren: Rachel Scheele, Benjamin and Alex Turpin; and her sister Delight Fox of Kearney, NE.
     
    She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, six brothers, eight sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.
     
    Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Monday, August 11, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in York with the Reverend Art Phillips officiating.  Graveside services will be at 3 pm Monday at the Kearney Cemetery, Kearney, NE.  Visitation will be from 1-9 pm both Saturday and Sunday at Metz Mortuary with the family greeting friends Sunday from 4:30-6 pm.  Light refreshments will be served at First Methodist Church of Kearney after the burial. 
     
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Shelton United Methodist Church, P.E.O. Educational Loan Fund or the donor’s choice.  ​
