Johann Steinmetz age 88 of York, NE passed away Wednesday, September 9, 2026 surrounded by his family in Stromsburg, NE. He was born June 10, 1938 in Sivatz, Yugoslavia to Johann and Katharina (Art) Steinmentz. In 1951, Johann and his family moved to the United States. On August 10, 1956, Johann joined the United States Navy where he proudly served until August 12, 1960 when he was honorably discharged. Johann was a longtime meat packer having worked at Gibbon, NE, Loup City, NE and York.
On March 17, 1963 he was married to Lola Billington in York. He was an avid fisherman, gardener and Husker football and volleyball fan. Johann loved sports. He also enjoyed playing pitch, cribbage, gin rummy and teasing folks with his own brand of humor.
He is survived by his sister Irma Kuhrts of Santa Rosa, CA and his brother Fred Steinmetz of York. Also surviving are his step children, Rona (Fred) Sheehan of Central city, NE and Randall Kissel of Stromsburg. Grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lola, son Johnny, daughter Heidi Jo, sisters Irene Weiss, Helen Dallas and infant sister Katherine.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00am Saturday, September 26, 2026 at the New Life Community Church in Grand Island, NE with Pastor Sean Amen officiating. Burial will be held 2:00 p.m., Sunday, September 27, 2026 in the York’s Greenwood Cemetery. Johann has been cremated so there will be no viewing or visitation. Memorials may be directed to his family for later designation.
