On Feb. 1, 1942, he married Helen Ruth Anderson.
He joined the Army Nov. 2, 1942, as an enlisted reserve and was trained at Milford Trade School in electrical engineering. He went into active duty Aug. 9, 1943, in the Army Signal Corps. He was stationed at Camp Kohler, Calif., for basic training, and was transferred to Sacramento, Calif., 9th Service Command, accompanied by his wife, Helen. He was discharged in 1946 and lived in York from that time forward.
He graduated from Fairmont High School in 1940. Living on a farm he learned to be a mechanic. He worked at International Harvester as a mechanic and shop foreman for the service department until 1963. He worked at Geis Motors for two years and then as mechanic and service foreman at KROY Industries until he retired in 1996 at the age of 74.
He and his wife, Helen visited every state in the United States except Maine. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in York and the York Lion’s Club. He and his family lived at 910 Greenwood until he and Helen built a home on West 10th St., both in York. John was a resident of Willow Brook Assisted Living since 2011.
John is survived by his daughter, Judy and husband Roger Maneely of York; grandson, David Maneely of Columbus; great-granddaughters, Alexis and Kaitlyn and great-grandson Thorin; daughter, Janet Kendrick of Fort Worth, Texas; grandson, Jonathan Boyer and great-granddaughter, Lauren and great-grandson, Ryan of York; grandson, Tommy Boyer-Kendrick and great-grandsons, Max and Mason of Spokane, Wash.; brother, Robert Bettger and his wife Lila of Fairmont; sister, Dorothy Aitken and her husband Jim of Needles, Calif. and sister-in-law, Mary Catherine Bettger of San Diego, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one brother.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, 2014 at First United Methodist Church in York with the Reverend Art Phillips officiating. Interment will be in York’s Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. on Wednesday and from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. The family will be present to greet friends Thursday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the church.
