    Lois Marie Smith
    ​Lois Marie Smith, age 88, of York, NE died Saturday, January 2, 2021 at York. She was born January 28, 1932 to Herbert and Clara (Heiden) Reetz in rural York County. Lois was baptized on February 28, 1932 and later confirmed on April 14, 1946, both at St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural York. She attended St. Paul Lutheran School for eight years. She graduated from Benedict High School in May 1950. On September 13, 1953, she was united in marriage to Theodore Snider. To this union three children were born: Shirley, Alice, and Allen. After Theodore died, Lois was then married to Forrest F. Smith on May 5, 1984.

    ​Lois worked for some years in retail, including Pancake Jewelry and JCPenney, as well as the Palmyra Sale Barn. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in York and Peace Lutheran Church in Waverly. She was a member of the LWML and enjoyed quilting at the church. She volunteered at the Orphan Grain Train, the Hearthstone, and Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed sewing, traveling, flowers, and baking. She loved her entire family.

    She is survived by her children Shirley (James P. Higgins II) Higgins of Seward, NE, Alice (Doug) Gloystein of Hastings, NE, and Allen (Stephanie) Snider of York, step-son James (Nancy) Smith of La Grange, KY, 14 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren with one on the way, sister-in-law Lola Reetz of Stromsburg, and nieces and nephews.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, grandson Michael Snider, infant granddaughter Christa Ocken, brothers Eugene and Leabert, sister Norma Jean, and brother-in-law Thomas Snider.

    Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 pm, Thursday, January 7, 2021 at Faith Lutheran Church with the Reverend Ben Francisco officiating. Burial will follow in St. Paul Cemetery, north of York. Lois’s service will be livestreamed on the church’s website at http://www.faithlutheranyork.com/. COVID 19 Funeral Guidelines will be implemented with limited spaced seating (75% occupancy), 6 feet of separation between household units and masks required.

    Visitation will be held from 4-8pm on Tuesday and 9am-8pm on Wednesday at the mortuary. Memorials, in lieu of flowers and plants, may be directed to St. Paul Cemetery Association, Mission Central, or to Orphan Grin Train.
