Marie Buerkle
Marie Anna Louise Reed Buerkle, age 102, of York, NE, died Saturday, November 10, 2012 at York.
Marie, the youngest child of John and Maria (Manske) Reed, was born at Thurston, NE on June 5, 1910. As an infant she moved with her family to Pierce, NE where she graduated from high school. On June 5. 1928, she was married to Theodore B. Buerkle of Franklin, NE who was a linotype operator and shop foreman for the Pierce County Call at that time. Their entire married life together was shared in the newspaper field.
In 1932 they moved to Plainview, NE where Mr. Buerkle became managing editor of the Plainview News. They moved to Crawford, NE in 1942 where he was co-editor of the Northwest News for a brief time. Returning to Plainview the following year, they leased and later purchased the Plainview News, and together, were editors and publishers of the paper until Theodore’s death on January 13, 1955.
In March of that year, Marie sold the paper and began employment as a part-time associate of the J.C. Penney store in Plainview and also worked at the Mauck Photography Studio as a receptionist. In August 1957 she became a full-time office associate at J.C. Penneys.
Marie transferred to the J.C. Penney store in York, NE in May 1959 as office merchandise record’s associate and assistant cashier. Later she became office supervisor and in 1973, and was made assistant manager of the store in addition to her other duties. She retired in October 1975 after more than 20 years as a J.C. Penney associate.
Marie was a member of the Plainview Congregational UCC Church and an associate member of the York Baptist Congregational Church. Through the years, she had served her church at Plainview as Sunday School teacher and deaconess, and president and secretary of the Women’s Fellowship. She was also a former member and secretary of the Plainview Women’s Club and member of the Plainview PTA. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Claire Fryer Post 148. As a member of the York church she served on the diaconate and then served as financial secretary for 12 years. She was treasurer of the Women’s Guild as well.
Marie is survived by her daughter Dale Kehler of Greeley, NE; 13 grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren; son-in-law Robert Bellows of McCool Jct., NE; nieces, nephews; and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter Jeanette Bellows; two sisters, Mabel McKibbon and Gladys Manske; three brothers, Wellington, Edwin, and Chester Reed; son-in-law Francis Kehler; grandson Pat Kehler; granddaughter Jeanne Kemper; and great-granddaughter Dawn Marie Kehler.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Plainview, NE. Visitation will be from 1-5 p.m. Tuesday at Metz Mortuary. Memorials may be directed to the Nebraska Children’s Home or to the family for later designation.
