Melvin Ehlers – Metz Mortuary

    Melvin John Peter Ehlers, a lifelong farmer, of Waco, NE, went to the loving arms of Jesus on Thursday, March 8, 2012 at the age of 94 years and 14 days.  He was born February 23, 1918 at the Ehlers homestead at Thayer, NE, to Louis and Elizabeth (Bredehoft) Ehlers.  He was baptized on March 17, 1918 and later confirmed in the Christian faith on May 1, 1932 at Zion Lutheran Church, Thayer, NE.  He attended Zion Parochial School and then graduated from Thayer High School.  Following high school, Melvin continued to farm and then served in the US Army during WWII.  He was united in marriage to Helen I. Rhode on June 3, 1944.
    Melvin was an active lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Thayer.  He served on the Waco School Board, was a board member of United Farmers Coop, and was an avid Husker football fan.  His greatest love, however, was his family and farming. 
    Left to cherish his memory are daughters: Lynette and her husband Galen Naber of York, Mary Bereuter of Lincoln, and Wanda and her husband Phil Hall of York; grandchildren: Shelly and her husband Steve Covert and their daughter Megan of Lincoln, Holly and her husband Jeff Epke and their children Dylan and Sydney of Wichita, KS, Nathan Bereuter of Lincoln, Aaron Bereuter of Lincoln, Lance and his wife Hilda Hall of Waco, Elizabeth Hall and Jake Brouillette of Waco, and Samuel Hall of York.
    Melvin also leaves behind sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Francis Starr of Hastings, NE; Edgar Rhode of Copperas Cove, TX, Clarence (Isabelle) Rhode of Minneapolis, MN, Dorothy Sackschewsky of Oak Park Heights, MN, Deloris (Wayne) Glasser of Madison, NE, Phyllis Pinnow of Copperas Cove, TX; nieces; nephews; and a host of friends. 
    Greeting him in Heaven are his parents, wife, grandson Jordan John Hall; siblings: Leonard (Olga) Ehlers, Edna (Alfred) Sackschewsky, Gertrude (Bill) Sackschewsky, Alvin Ehlers, Dorothy (Fred) Littau; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Elvera (George) Weiler, Margaret (Erich) Heiden, Luella Rash, Lorette Rhode, Elmer Sackschewsky, and Richard Pinnow.
    Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at Zion Lutheran Church in Thayer with the Reverend Lee Seetin officiating.  Burial will be in Zion Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-9 pm and Monday 9am-9pm, with family greeting friends Sunday afternoon from 2-4 pm at the mortuary.  Memorials may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church or The Lutheran Hour.
