Richard “Dick” Patrick Smith

    Richard Patrick (Dick) Smith, age 86, of York, NE, died Friday, June 7, 2024 in York. Dick was born on November 15, 1937 to Harold and Mildred (Johnston) Smith in Palatine, IL. He was united in marriage to Eileen (Epperson) Smith on March 28, 1970.

    Dick was a proud veteran, serving in the Army from Feb. 56-Aug. 56 and in the Air Force from September 56-September 64. He went on to become President of Falstaff Brewing Corporation and chairman of General Brewing, owner of York Sports Center and H&R Block, was a claims supervisor for North Central Crop Insurance and retired from Crop Insurance Sales. He was a past volunteer for many area organizations including CASA. In addition, Dick was a member of the American Legion and was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where he served as a lector for many years. His gift of storytelling and making others feel welcome wherever he went will be remembered by many.

    He is survived by his wife Eileen Smith of York, daughters: Jeannette Covias, Loveland, CO.; Cheryl (Rich) Trzupek, Lincoln, NE; Patty Yount (Phoenix, AZ); Rochelle (Dave) Geiger, York; sons: Mike Smith (and service dog Jax) (Monticello, MN); Rick (Jill Beck) Smith (Omaha, NE) grandchildren: Heidi (Tom) Washburn, Seth (Rosie) Covias, Carrie Hageseth, Luke (Sarah) Covias, and Josh (Allie) Covias all of the Loveland, CO area. Joseph Duysen (Crown Point, IN); Jay Duysen (Arlington Heights, IL); Alec Duysen (Lincoln, NE); Nathan Yount (Tempe, AZ); Ryan Yount (Tempe, AZ); Taylor Smith (Phoenix, AZ); Gina (Parker) Novak (Polk, NE); Emily (Trey) Perry (McCool Jct., NE); Abigail (Tristan) Perry (McCool Jct., NE); Jack and Finn Smith (Omaha, NE); 15 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren; brothers: James (Ellen) Smith (Waterloo, IA); Robert Smith (Council Bluffs, IA); Paul (Patricia) Smith (Waterloo, IA); Dr. Peter (Jane) Smith (Omaha, NE) Kevin Smith (Surfside Beach, S.C.); numerous nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Jacob Covias, mother and father-in-law, brothers Tom Smith, David Smith, Philip Smith, and sister Joanne Russell; several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

    Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:00 am Wednesday, June 12, 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in York, with the Reverend Fathers Justin Fulton, John Sullivan and Janusz Marzynski officiating. Inurnment with Military Honors will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery east of York following services. Richard has been cremated so there will be no viewing. Visitation and signing of his book will be from 1-8 p.m., Tuesday, with his family greeting friends one hour prior to the 7:00 pm Rosary Prayer service that same evening at the mortuary. In lieu of flowers or plants, memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association, Juvenile Diabetes, and/or St. Joseph Catholic School tuition support fund.
